While the "Soft Focus" patch became a cult classic of 90s multi-effects units, the Ghost series was born from an even more unique story: the inspiration comes from an FX500B bass unit that randomly changed patches, revealing unexpected settings and nearly unfindable effect combinations. This "error" served as a starting point to reintroduce forgotten sounds into a modern architecture, more straightforward to use on a pedalboard.
The Soft Focus Ghost version takes the idea further by replacing the "Symph" control with a new approach: an integrated phase shifter in the mix, designed to enrich depth and the sensation of movement without overpowering the signal.
The Soft Focus Ghost is aimed at musicians seeking an expressive ambience pedal, capable of transforming a clean sound into a cinematic texture, but also thickening a crunch or adding immediate depth to picking parts. It is particularly comfortable in shoegaze, dream pop, post-rock, ambient, but also finds its place in pop and rock whenever a "studio" space under the fingers is desired.
Live, it allows switching from a present sound to a wide, enveloping wash without changing the whole set. In the studio, its wet/dry mix facilitates placement in the mix, whether you seek a subtle reverb or a fully embraced effect.
The pedal combines several essential building blocks of the "Soft Focus" signature: chorus, plate reverb, phase, and a dry input/gain stage. The great strength of this Ghost version is its "enhancing" phasing: the speed and depth of the phaser are linked to the same control, making faster settings naturally deeper, while slower settings remain more airy and subtle.
The Mod knob becomes a central control: it acts as the main depth for all modulations, convenient for quickly balancing the overall movement. The Mix ranges from 100% Dry to 100% Wet to dose the presence of the direct signal. Finally, the Vol control adds gain to the Dry signal before processing and can serve as a clean boost when using buffer/trails mode.
The Soft Focus Ghost is characterized by a wide and bright ambience, with a chorus that thickens without blurring the attack, and a plate reverb with adjustable decay that brings the much sought-after "halo" sensation. The Ghost control adds a movement more organic than a simple sweep: it achieves a depth and texture that seem to integrate into the sound rather than impose on it.
Depending on the Mix setting, you can stay within a fairly "studio" aesthetic (clear dry signal) or shift toward a more immersive, almost synthetic rendering. At 18 V, the pedal gains in dynamic headroom and can deliver a more robust dry signal, which helps maintain a sharp attack while pushing very dense ambiences.
