A very nice little monster to handle (+1 for the super well-designed manual that guides you step by step through a sequence to understand the impact of each element on the sound coming out of the device), I initially regretted the limit of 8 steps but in use, increasing to 16 would have lost ease of handling. It sounds, it spits, it hits hard, but it's never unpleasant and you can even get pretty ethereal and soft bells if you know how to talk to it. Note that in a semi-modular setup, a CV quantizer will work very well with the DFAM by turning continuous knobs into different scales and will open up more melodic possibilities. In any case, as has been said: it's not really a drum machine, nor a classic synth, but rather a very interesting in-between that will bring something totally new to your setup.
