Essential information about the Verone score
With "Le Chant du Loup," Jérémy Manca asserted a writing style for solo cello that is both incisive and narrative. "Verone" extends this aesthetic by projecting it into the vibrant mass of a sextet - expandable to a full cello orchestra. Commissioned by the Cellofan Festival at the request of Frédéric Audibert and premiered in July 2023 in Callian, the work fits within the great tradition of cello ensembles while injecting rhythmic modernity and harmonic colors tinged with jazz.
"Verone" structures contrasting tableaux where the singing line coexists with driving cells featuring sharp rhythms. The writing exploits the complementarity of the parts: dialogues of soli and tutti responses, tense counter-melodies, dense harmonic layers, and a constant play on registers to expand the cello's palette, from deep bass to the bright flashes of the upper register. Jazz influences appear through syncopations, nervous accentuations, and harmonies with extended colors, without ever sacrificing the clarity of the thematic discourse.
Designed for six cellos but also conceived for a larger ensemble, this sextet favors a spectacular collective resonance, ideal for a conservatory ensemble or a cello orchestra in concert. The high difficulty level lies as much in rhythmic precision and intonation within tight aggregates as in endurance and articulation homogeneity. Conductors will find flexible material to shape, between energetic pulse, lyrical breaths, and atmospheres of progressive tension.
