Monochromes comes from the composer's interest in color, associated since childhood with light. Light becoming musical light.
It is the different sensations that colors evoke in her that she wished to transpose into three varied color-atmospheres, imagining each movement haloed with its own light, its own texture.
The first Monochrome, lyrical, reveals the shapes of an imaginary and sound landscape as the rhythm evolves. The contours of the melody, resembling shapes or objects, become increasingly precise, shaping themselves from the quarter note to the thirty-second notes in a progressive ascent before descending towards the half notes. Could it be the color white?
That is what the second Monochrome suggests, misty and atmospheric. The effects of wind, ultrasound, loss of the sense of time, expansion of the range, evoke the color pearl gray.
Contrasting in tempo, character, and fervor, the last Monochrome is the accumulation of the textures of the two other movements, the explosion of a multitude of colors, creating the illusion of a single and yet multiple color, like an iridescent kaleidoscope.
