D-18
The D-18 appeared in its current form in 1934 and has changed very little since. Nearly a century later, Martin's flagship dreadnought model remains as relevant as ever.
The paragon of the dreadnought. From the most rootsy country bluegrass to Kurt Cobain on MTV Unplugged, including Doc Watson, Kris Kristofferson, Elvis, Jerry Garcia, and Rich Robinson, there is no self-respecting guitarist who hasn't played a D-18 during their career. While the D-28 represents the refined dreadnought, the D-18 is its little sister, perhaps a bit more rustic. It is even more understated, featuring a mahogany body for a warmer sound. For over a century, the D-18 has represented the ultimate mahogany dreadnought against which all others are judged, the reference all other brands strive to copy.
New with the mythical. In 2012, Martin revamped its D-18 to offer a model perfectly adapted to the demands of the modern guitarist, without sacrificing what makes vintage models charming. The bracing is the famous advanced and scalloped X typical of pre-war examples, the tuners are the small butterbean style, a visual nod to the same pre-war models (as are the Old Style 18 fretboard markers), but the neck is a concession to the contemporary era as it is much slimmer than vintage slabs. The High Performance profile allows fast and precise playing without feeling hindered.
Big sound doesn't lie.The D-18 has earned the nickname "cannon" among guitarists, a reference to the impressive volume it can deliver. Just spend a few minutes with this new benchmark to understand how the historic design combined with the advanced X bracing lets the top resonate for a projection that commands respect. No need to be amplified to compete with a banjo, upright bass, or mandolin! Yet, if you caress it with your fingers, the D-18 can also deliver nuance. There is a good reason why this model remains a standard.
