D-18

The D-18 appeared in its current form in 1934 and has changed very little since. Nearly a century later, Martin’s flagship dreadnought model remains as relevant as ever.

The epitome of the dreadnought.
From the most rootsy bluegrass country to Kurt Cobain on MTV Unplugged, passing through Doc Watson, Kris Kristofferson, Elvis, Jerry Garcia, and Rich Robinson, no self-respecting guitarist has not played a D-18 at some point in their career. While the D-28 represents the refined dreadnought, the D-18 is its little sister, perhaps a bit more rustic. It is even more understated and features a mahogany body for a warmer tone. For over a century, the D-18 has been the ultimate mahogany dreadnought against which all others are measured, the benchmark that all other brands strive to copy.

New with a legendary heritage.
In 2012, Martin redesigned the D-18 to offer a model perfectly suited to the demands of the modern player, without sacrificing the charm of vintage models. The bracing is the famous forward-shifted scalloped X typical of pre-war examples, the tuners are the small butterbean style, a visual nod to the same pre-war models (as are the Old Style 18 fretboard markers), but the neck is a concession to contemporary times as it is much slimmer than vintage necks. The High Performance profile allows for fast, precise playing without feeling restricted.

Big sound doesn’t lie.
The D-18 has earned the nickname “cannon” among guitarists, referring to the impressive volume it can deliver. Spend just a few minutes with this new standard and you’ll understand how the historic design combined with the forward-shifted X bracing lets the top resonate for a projection that commands respect. No need for amplification to compete with a banjo, upright bass, or mandolin! Yet, if you play it gently, the D-18 can also deliver nuance. There’s a good reason why this model remains a standard.
