Philip Sayce is a true master in the art of harnessing the quintessential Strat® sound, captivating audiences worldwide with his blend of blues and rock. Since the late 90s, a guitar has been at the heart of his solo career and collaborations with artists like Jeff Healey, Melissa Etheridge, and Uncle Kracker. The "Mother" Strat® is a modified 1963 Fender Stratocaster®, an incredibly well-aged guitar whose wear matches the intensity of the concerts it plays.
Philip is known for his habit of improvising a bottleneck solo with a beer bottle during his shows. One fateful night, the original 1963 pickups of his guitar were soaked and eventually died, damaged by corrosion and a short circuit. However, when he replaced them with pickups from a 1958 Strat®, the "Mother" regained a youthful and otherwise legendary sound. These slightly underwound late 50s pickups produce a clear, full-bodied tone, which has since become the foundation of Philip's sound.
Thanks to meticulous reverse engineering of these '58 pickups from the "Mother," the Custom Shop Seymour Duncan was able to recreate the singing and punchy Strat® tone produced by this magical guitar. They deliver the purest and finest clean sounds and work wonderfully with gain achieved by adding an overdrive or one of Philip's favorite fuzz pedals. The Seymour Duncan "Mother" Stratocaster® pickup set is equipped with vintage Alnico 5 magnets, perfectly designed to reproduce the feel and responsiveness of Philip's original guitar.
The first 500 sets are specially aged by the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop to replicate the wear of the originals. A certificate of authenticity signed by Philip and Seymour W. Duncan is included in the limited edition packaging. All sets receive Philip's signature on the bottom plate.
