14 major lessons
The first volume of this method was aimed at beginner students - this second volume is intended for students from the middle of the 1st cycle onwards. It is divided into 14 "major lessons." Each lesson can be the subject of work lasting at least two weeks... Lesson 13 (Mozart variations) can be used as a kind of study collection. The major solfeggio difficulties it presents are not accidental. It seems essential that the discovery of new rhythms and new notations (ornaments, for example) takes place within the instrument class, a discovery supported by texts of the highest quality (Mozart...). This remark also applies to Haendel's Siciliana or Vivaldi's Concerto per flautino. The objective of this work is to teach each student a working method. The four pages that make up each lesson follow a logical structure that the author has sought to make perceptible. Not all fingerings are indicated - learning to find good fingerings is an essential training from the beginning of instrumental studies. Invention is an important guiding thread of this method. Let us repeat: this is not a recreation, but a strong and foundational element of the musical and technical education of a cellist. Thus, each lesson offers: - a prelude, of which all or part must be invented, - an invention exercise.
Some advice intended for students can be found, on bow strokes, fingerings, shifts, etc. - they can in no way replace those of the teacher... It was preferred to start with the backward extension of the first finger, perhaps easier than the forward extension for which the whole hand is engaged. But the teacher could reverse lessons 2 and 3... A big thank you to Sébastien Robert who teaches cello at the Conservatory of the Pays de Montbéliard and directs the Musical Academy of Lunéville. He reviewed these pages, expressed useful comments, proposed good fingerings, and gave the author very valuable advice.
