Like its predecessor, the M 150 uses a small 12mm membrane capsule, encased in a 40mm sphere. The capsule itself is a pressure transducer, but the sphere changes its omnidirectional pattern to become progressively more directional at higher frequencies. The M 150's condenser transducer is exceptional in other ways as well: Its ultra-thin diaphragm is made of titanium, a light but rigid metal, and is spaced just 10 microns from the backplate, also made of titanium. This results in a sound transducer with unrivaled transient response. This delicate capsule is protected by an acoustically open head grille, similar in shape to that of the legendary M 50.
The signal from the capsule is amplified by a tube circuit using a subminiature triode, specially selected for optimal transmission characteristics and the lowest self-noise of only 15 dB-A. Unlike its predecessor developed in the 1950s, the M 150 does not use an output transformer which could color the sound. Instead, the M 150 relies on an ultra-transparent transformerless output stage that guarantees clear bass, even at the highest levels, and a wide dynamic range of 119 dB. In addition, this ultra-modern output stage allows the use of 300 m cables without transmission losses.
A -10 dB switch allows the microphone signal to be attenuated at the output for use with low headroom preamplifiers. Another switch activates a 40 Hz noise filter; in the LIN position, the low-cut filter is not completely deactivated, but increased to 16 Hz in order to protect the console input from background noise, because the low-frequency response of the capsule is practically unlimited.
